peter quill
In a galaxy still recovering from a decades-long war, former space pirate Peter Quill tries to eke out a living for himself and his 'coworkers,' who all happen to be some of the galaxy's deadliest criminals. Former criminals. The Guardians of the Galaxy have only been "registered" for a little under a year, and their track record on jobs that actually pay is... not great. They still steal, and kill, and do things that Nova Corps would call illegal, but they generally do it for the right reasons, and they only try to scam people who deserve it. Which is probably why they always seem to end up deeper in the red on the off chance that they 'successfully' finish a job.

After a particularly long string of failures, Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Drax start to have second thoughts the whole 'team' thing, but hope springs eternal and Peter is nothing if not foolishly optimistic. It's fine! They're a team! They've got this! One more job, one more try. There's no way a job that takes them into the remains of a galactic warzone can go poorly. And if it does, and they get arrested by one of Peter's exes? They'll figure it out. And if she has a daughter who's twelve and, oh, the last time Peter saw Ko-Rel was twelve years ago...? Uh. Hm. Yeah.

appearance
peter dresses in what he remembers as 'cool' back on earth. this means leather pants, leather jackets, and perfectly coiffed hair. of course, peter lives in space so he's had to make some adjustments to include weapon holsters, jet boots, scanners, and a bit of armor upgrades here and there. still, he had the logo to his favorite childhood band embroidered on the back of his coat because it's metal. his appearance is as much about comforting himself with the familiar as it is about coming off as the confident leader he tries to be. unlike the rest of his team, he's just a squishy human in a big wild galaxy, so peter makes sure that if he's going to stand out, it'll be on his terms.

abilities
spartoi lineagepeter is the only son of the king of the spartoi empire, from the planet spartax. besides being able to call himself a space prince, this doesn't really do much for him. this also allows him to operate his elemental blasters, which are heirlooms that work exclusively for those of royal spartoi lineage. peter's spartoi blasters can change forms and come with 5 settings (6 if you count the fact that they can shift into 'knuckles' for melee attacks); one for regular blaster fire, and 4 elemental settings which shoot ice, electricity, wind, and fire. their only limit is how quickly peter can reload or how quickly they overheat, depending on their form. but he essentially has infinite ammo.
sweet space tech since peter is functionally a regular human in a team of badasses, he makes up for his shortcomings with gear that keeps him agile in battle, as well as tech armor that can soak up a few hits before he goes down. he wears a pair of jetboots which allow him double jump or hover in midair for a short time, as well as zip across the battlefield and dodge enemy attacks. he is able to scan and analyze his surroundings using his visor which helps him keep track of useful details or dangers, including structural weaknesses, points of interest, and other helpful tips. it also looks really cool and helps keep his face from getting scorched in battle.
teamwork makes the dream work peter takes his role as leader of the guardians seriously, and likes to offer the team an ear when they need. he takes responsibility for fuckups and tries to make decisions with everyone in mind. his emphatic approach comes off a bit hokey to his friends, but he just wants to make sure that everyone knows they're appreciated and an important part of the team! this comes in the form of pep-talks, huddles, and positive feedback which psych up the team and help keep everyone focused. in-game this translates to peter's team huddles, which revive any knocked down guardians and provide temporary stat boosts as peter's 80s mixtape plays in the background. he's the team bard and he knows it.
background
Peter's mother always insisted that he was special -- that his father came from the stars, and that he'd left him and his mother for their own safety. Peter thought that was a fun story his mom told to make the truth easier to deal with. Turns out Peter was wrong. On his 13th birthday, Peter's mother, Meredith, told Peter the truth about his birthright. Peter's father was the king of Spartax, an alien planet. He was king, which meant Peter was a prince. But being a half-Spartoi bastard only meant trouble. And trouble found Peter despite his father being out of the picture. On that same day, Peter's home was attacked by the Chitauri, who kidnapped young Peter and killed his mother in the process. His life would never be the same.

Poor Peter lost everything in a matter of minutes, then found himself in a Chitauri prison where his only saving grace seemed to be that they wanted him alive. Peter was trapped and unable to understand or be understood by anyone. At first, Peter hoped for his father -- if he was some powerful alien, surely he would come save him? But he didn't. For three years he had a revolving door of cellmates that would be killed for sport in Chitauri gladiatorial matches, leaving Peter to becoming despondent and numb to so much death. Whoever his father was, he was clearly not coming to save Peter, and Peter was in no state to save himself.

Things finally turned around when Yondu Udonta was transferred into his cell. Yondu spoke English, and for the first time in years, Peter could finally connect with the world. Peter found out about where he was, about who he was, and about the Galactic War between Thanos-led Chitauri and the Resistance. Peter admired Yondu for his drive and desire for freedom, and it took only a year for the two of them to break out of prison. Peter quickly joined Yondu's space pirate crew, the Ravagers and enjoyed the sweet, sweet taste of freedom without ever looking back.

Except... You can take the human out of Terra, but you can't take the Terra out of Peter. As much as the Ravagers were a neutral force in the war (targeting both Chitauri and Resistance ships,) it didn't sit right with Peter. At 21, Peter managed to convince Yondu to step in and help fight off part of a Chitauri attack on Mercury. But the odds were against the Resistance, and Yondu wasn't about to stick around and die for a cause. Peter was, though. He knew that if Mercury fell, Earth would be next. Peter stayed behind and helped the remains of the Nova Corps destroy the Chitauri, and even had casual hook-ups with the Nova Centurion who was in charge, Kor-El. They knew it was just a fling while their lives were on the line, but it was nice. When it was all said and done, Peter went back to the Ravagers and Kor-El went back to Nova Corps. Not long after that, Richard Rider brought the Galactic War to an end and the galaxy was at peace for the first time in a decades.

The game takes place twelve years later, in a galaxy that's still recovering from a war that spanned the entire galaxy. People are recovering, but it's a lot slower than anyone would want. With Xandar destroyed and entire civilizations (like Spartax) lost to Thanos' attacks, it's little wonder that the galaxy is still barely scrambling to give itself some sense of normalcy. Peter sure is, having given up his life of crime for the sake of starting the Guardians of the Galaxy. Now if they can just finish a job and actually get paid for it, that would be great. The team's gotta eat, you know?
